Why a Skunk is Settling on Your Property

The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is looking for two main things: shelter and food. Dark, protected spaces—like under a deck, shed, patio, or concrete slab—make perfect dens. As for food, they are attracted to garbage, pet food left outside, and especially grubs living in your lawn.

How to Tell If a Skunk Is Around

  • A persistent odour around the house, especially in the evening and at night (skunks are nocturnal).
  • Cone-shaped holes in your lawn, about 7 to 10 cm in diameter, where they dig to find grubs.
  • A burrow or dug-out opening under a deck, shed, or foundation.
  • Traces of activity near access points at the base of structures.

Risks You Shouldn't Ignore

The danger isn't just the smell. A skunk will spray its liquid when it feels threatened—a terrible surprise for you or your dog. They can also carry rabies, and their digging damages lawns and landscaping. It's best to act early, before they give birth and the problem multiplies.

Why Leave It to a Professional

In Quebec, wildlife trapping and relocation are heavily regulated. Our interventions are carried out by a trapper trained in Fur-Bearing Animal Trapping and Management (PGAF, Fédération des trappeurs gestionnaires du Québec). This guarantees that the trapping and relocation are done properly and humanely. Depending on the situation, we can also seal off access points under structures to prevent another skunk from moving in—this is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Our Method

  1. Inspection – Locating the den, entry points, and food sources.
  2. Humane Trapping and Relocation – Safely moving the animal in compliance with Quebec regulations.
  3. Sealing Access Points (If Needed) – Closing openings under decks and structures to prevent a return, evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  4. Reducing Attractants – Advice on managing garbage, pet food, and treating your lawn for grubs.

The captured animal is released far enough away to ensure it won't come back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are skunks dangerous?
They can spray their liquid if they feel threatened and can carry rabies. It's best to avoid approaching them; leave it to a professional.
Do you handle both trapping and relocation?
Yes. We humanely trap and relocate skunks in accordance with Quebec wildlife regulations. Depending on the situation, we can also seal off access points to prevent another one from moving in.
What if there are baby skunks?
Babies are born around late May and remain dependent on their mother for about two months. During this period, we cannot relocate the mother alone. If left behind under a structure, the babies will die, and their decomposition will create a foul odour that is incredibly difficult to eliminate. We handle this either by capturing the whole family together or by scheduling the intervention once the young are independent (closer to the end of summer). Note: Babies can emit musk starting at about one week old and can spray within a few weeks (full power spray develops around 3 to 4 months)—so you should never attempt to handle them yourself. An inspection allows us to choose the right approach.
How can I prevent them from coming back?
By sealing off access points under structures and reducing food sources (garbage, pet food, and lawn grubs).
What should I do if my pet gets sprayed?
Avoid using water alone. Consult your veterinarian or look up an appropriate cleaning recipe, and have the source of the problem resolved to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
